The Rebirth of My.Netscape

Do-It-Yourself – At long last, the Netscape team is proud to release a Beta of the next generation My.Netscape, at: http://my.netscape.com. This site will be live tomorrow (Tuesday 3/6). My.Netscape will retain its identity as a personalized homepage, with a minimum of ad clutter. The initial release will in fact have no ads at all! Our programming staff has worked hard to create a framework that allows for scalability and UI elegance.

JamesMarcus: We've already gotten a huge influx of feedback on the new version of My.Netscape, and put up a My.Netscape FAQ that should clarify the most common confusions.

It's about freakin' time!!!! LOL. Hey, I hope they took the time necessary and got it right. I really liked the MyNetscape home page. All of my stuff right where I wanted it. Sort of like one stop shopping.

This I Gotta SEE!!!! I'm curious as to what it will be LIKE!!!! Actually my VERY FIRST sight on the web was NETSCAPE!!!!

I think the Netscape community will like it. Its clean and very much clutter free. Very easy to customize and set up.

Clean and clutter free.. Oh, and it has block breaker. you heard me... block breaker. Trey is the man.

Block Breaker will destroy your productivity - it should be the first module you add.

Questions related to the Netscape browser should be asked on the community page for the browser. The folks there have a lot more experience and an better help you with specific issues.

No need to get nasty roguehumor. Corey is talking about My Netscape which is not the Netscape browser. Two entirely different things.

avatar

Yes, people don't seem to know the difference between my.netscape, netscape.com, the Netscape browser (any version), and their Netscape coffee mug.

avatar
Reply

They really ARE two different things.

Aieee!! The strobe flashes made me feel like I was having an acid flashback from the 60's...or that I was being "programmed" by those pesky Greys. Thanx for sharing your experience, RH; now I know I'm not alone.

Gotta tell ya...I was getting so disgusted with the browser freezing up during this downtime, I downloaded Firefox. Hey whaddya want...I'm a gadget kinda guy! LOL

Hip Hip! Horay!

Perhaps this is the first step in an honest effort to save the Netscape brand from utter oblivion.

I hope so.

Just for clarity, this means it will be similar to the old Nestcape before it became a news blogging site? I really liked the old Nestcape and preferred it to Explorer. I still get my e-mail through this browser because it works better than explorer. When Netscape switched to the new format, I was horrified. Judging by all the negative commentary, I could see I was not alone. I think it was messed up when AOL entered the picture. I have never heard anyone have anything good to say about AOL.

I liked the old Netscape too. The good thing added was the news postings and comments, but that should not be the Home page, but a page to choose. I HATE having to select which mail service to send e-mails by. If I forget to select @netscape.net it sends it default as AIM mail and people don't recognize the address and delete it. I want to use ONLY netscape.net for sending and receiving e-mail.

I dumped AOL long ago, didn't like it or its price.

Amen to all of your comments, guys! I LOVED the old Netscape with the cool anchor logo. And what in heaven's name is going on with the email...why is AOL getting into the picture?

I was a longtime Netscaper, 'cause it was refreshing to take a break from Internet Explorer. Now I'm getting the same feeling about Netscape. They "fixed" something that was working fine, and that seems to be a common problem in western civilization: we just can't let a good thing be!

With all of the problems N'scape has had, I'll wait until after the time change before attempting a look %^)

what probles?

avatar

Nope. Just tried it. It still is not there. Just the same old message about the site being worked on.

It's live now. Have a look.

Looks good. Signed up for a bunch of interesting feeds. Good work, Netscape team.

I, like a number of other responders, am a long time Netscape user. I am glad the MyNetscape is back but am sorry to see that it didn't stay a little closer to the old version. I preferred the lay out a little better but will give this new one a chance. My initial response is that I would like it better if the modules had a little more configuration control besides color. I also ran across a small bug in the weather module regarding zip code references which I have already submitted feedback on.

Still gotta say welcome back to MyNetscape and the crew behind it.

Is anyone else having touble getting to the old info you had stored on my netscape page. I had a crap load of stocks listed in my portfolio and can't seem to find any of my old info etc. I hate it so far!!

Too little too late, i switched to Safari and use the Apple home page. The old 7.2 browser does not work well with Mac OS 10 hence the reason why the My Home page is all messed up

avatar

This isn't about the Netscape browser. It's about the My Netscape webpage found here: http://my.netscape.com/

My Verizon DSL e-mail does not work in My Netscape Beta! I can neither send nor receive. Everything was fine until this morning when Beta appeared. None of my "preferences" settings has changed; plenty of new mail available through the Verizon home page, but it's cumbersome. Suggestions?

avatar

Finally having a homepage back is nice, however, I would like to add ZDNET.com as one of my options as it was an original choice under the old "My Netscape."

avatar

Use the feedback form to send your suggestion.

avatar

You can also create it yourself quite easily.

If you add the RSS module and click Configure on it, simply type in http://www.zdnet.com/ in the Feed URL box, and it will instantly create a ZDNet module for you

avatar

That's an even better answer.

avatar

Two comments, 1)Too bad it took so very long to get anything.

2) Based on the "beta" version, the old one was better... so far much better.

avatar
Reply

I lost my stock portfolios, too. Anyone know how to get them back?

avatar
Reply

The developers are working on migrating stock portfolios and bookmarks of old users into the new version, as mentioned in this article.

avatar
Reply

Sorry, but I'm not impressed so far. Maybe I'm just an old fart, but I miss the former iteration of "My Netscape." I'll be patient, though -- and see if this beta version will continue to morph into something more useful to me.

Hmmm...Cool web 2.0 layout. But it's not a radically new idea. Other portals have done this for a few months now. Still, much appreciated. Wish I could have more customized content here. More tools.

Wish that for users of high-rez screens, you'd offer the option of a fourth column. Oh well, can't have everything.

Also, it's easy to understand not wanting to have other custom content when you want to offer your own services, but it'd be great to have some other custom content, like my Google calendar, and maybe del.icio.us access, and more interactivity within each "window" without having to go to the site....

All in all, though, good job. Must have been a tough one to complete. Congrats. It looks good.

More modules are in the works (this was just what was rolled out initially), but Christian is right, use the feedback form on the My.Netscape site to tell us how to make it better - it does actually get read ;)

Great work guys. I never really had much interest in the old version of my.netscape, but this new one is great. I've got it set as my homepage now.

Sorry to throw water on the fire but I'm still waiting to get my bookmarks back.

MY NETSCAPE

I am glad to see the change in my netscape, but how do I pick up all of my financial portfolio info that was on the old format. Is it gone forever? karalston
