A rattlesnake rancher who calls himself Bayou Bob found a new way to make money: Stick a rattler inside a bottle of vodka and market the concoction as an "ancient Asian elixir." But Bayou Bob Popplewell's bright idea appears to have landed him on the wrong side of the law, because he has no liquor license.

"Popplewell said he will fight the charges. His intent, he said, is not to sell an alcoholic beverage but a healing tonic. He said he has customers of Asian descent who believe the concoction has medicinal properties."

"It's almost a spiritual thing," said Popplewell, 63."

"But alcohol commission agent Scott Jones pointed out that investigators confiscated 429 bottles of snake vodka and one bottle of snake tequila. At $23 a bottle, that's almost $10,000 worth of reptilian booze."

      OMG!!! What next!!!!

Hell that is just a pickled snake, not bottled with bootleg booze. I would like to have one for a decoration in the office.

Popplewell's claim that a rattlesnake in alcohol is an "ancient Asian elixir" is not going to fly before the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Some one is bound to point out that rattlesnakes are not found in Asia.

Everyone knows that the recipe for the "ancient Asian elixir" uses a Cobra not a rattlesnake.

I have a bottle from India, with a cobra, brought as a gift from a friend years ago. How he got it thru customs is a mystery to me! Nobody has ever had the nerve to take the cap off!

Popplewell must be on some more of an ego trip from too much Snake venom.

This is still popular in Vietnam. Except they use a Cobra.

I was just about to say the same thing. Depending on the size and quality, a bottle of it can ranged from the hundreds to thousands of dollars on the black market because it is illegal to bring into this country last time I checked. This rancher is a moron digging himself a deep ditch. If he thinks the fines he is getting for selling alchohol with out a license is bad, he could be facing charges from the FDA for trying to sell it as a health tonic. Or even from the DEA for trying to distribute a possible control substance. If his lawyer was any good (if he is smart enough to have one), he would tell him to shut up and plea bargin.

This was a great story Stoners thanks for posting.

In the state where I live a few years ago a pointy headed bureaucrat traded some of our great turkeys to Texas for some rattlers. Seems, according to this bureaucrat, that rattlers were becoming endangered here. The problem, we, the folks who live here, had been trying for years to endanger them. lol

...in Thailand, and Singapore; these would command a high price for novelty...I've had cobra stew before; not bad... but rattlesnakes are legend around the world as the only snake that warns before it strikes...

Your first hint might be "Bayou Bob", which, if memory serves, is not a common Asian name.

Interesting not something I would want. It would be interesting to know how many people would have bought that stuff.
